Tips on Utilizing Accent Furniture

Accent furniture, if used well, can work to bring a room's interior design together in a way that makes it feel complete. Though accent pieces shouldn't stand out too much, they should be chosen in a way that adds flavor and spice to the room. Accent pieces should bring out a room's strengths and hide its weaknesses.

The important thing to remember when accenting a room is to take great care when choosing you accent furniture. There's a lot of it out there, and it can be easy for a homeowner to get carried away. Remember that when it comes to interior décor, less is sometimes more. In the end, your use of accent furniture should depend on the design of the room it's being used in.

Style

The style of your accent furniture shouldn't clash with the style of the rest of the room. A bedroom containing predominantly classic style furniture will be thrown off by a blatantly ultra-modern lamp.

On the flipside of that coin, however, if you have a room with ornately designed main furniture pieces, adding even more elaborate accent furniture will just make the room feel too extravagant and tacky.

Filling out Bare Space

One of the best things about accent pieces is that they help fill up awkward spaces. You won't always be able to arrange your main furniture in such a way that all wall spaces are appropriately filled up. Sometimes there will be that awkward stretch of bare wall or that empty corner. This where a well placed decorative chest or hat rack can work wonders to make empty spaces feel complete. Again, don't get too carried away, as over-stuffing a room with accent pieces will make it feel overwhelming and cluttered.

Wall Art

Wall art can be great for adding flavor to entryways and halls, as well as living rooms, bedroom, and chimney nooks. Remember to place all wall art at eye level. If it's hanging above a couch or some other piece of major furniture, the art should be about 6 inches above it. Any more than that and it will start to feel disconnected from the rest of the furniture in the room.
